David founded American WHO with John Nicholson and David Lieb, all formally from the Prog Rock Tribute YOUR MOVE where they specialized in YES, Genesis, Rush, Kansas and others of that genre.

The Kids Are Alright

So WHO is this guy anyway?

IN THE BEGINNING
DW was born in 1960 in Bonn Germany while his father was on a Fulbright scholarship. He was born in a hospital run by nuns and back then, no husbands were allowed in with their wives during child birth so he did what any good American in Germany would do... went to a bierhalle and drank. This particular establishment looked out over the The Sieben Berge ('The Seven Hills') which is supposedly where Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came from. Once upon the earth, DW spent the first 6 months of his life riding in the back of a Carolina Blue VW Beetle in a home made bed.Once back in America and being an 'Academic brat' he moved a bit living in Minnesota, Pennsylvania (three seperate times), North Carolina and eventually Boston.

DW started his first band NOVA with some friends in Greensboro NC when he was about 14. They played all original music and had harmonies much like The Beatles. Later after High School he played in a popular rock gig called The South Park Band and cut his chops in biker bars. After escaping from NC in the middle of the night for reasons best left unsaid, he moved to PA (for the third and last time) living in Lancaster County where he met a group of Prog/Improv based musicians called Animation and joined as their vocalist ultimately moving to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music in the late 1980s.

Interestingly enough, DW originally intended to study guitar at Bzerklee but ended up setting his hand on fire on his last day of work arriving to Boston, hand bandaged and strapped to his chest. With guitar not being an option he majored in Vocal Performance. At Berklee, DW met John Nicholson and began singing in Nicholson's band Kneeling On Rice up until about 1988 when DW quit playing professional music as he was tired of living in bars. DW also met John Songdahl at Berklee but the two did not play together until John joined
The American WHO in 2012.

Jumping way ahead... American WHO was born from the ashes of JN and DW's initial tribute band YOUR MOVE (circa 2002 - 2010) which focused on the music of YES, Genesis, Rush, Kansas and Pink Floyd. YM also included multi-instrumentalist David Lieb who came along with the change to American WHO but who later left the band cause... well... he's just too damn busy with otherm usical projects! John Songdahl stepped in to fill the role in 2012.

DW has three kids... Garrett 27, a science fiction writer, Caitlyn 21, a college student and singer, and Abby 20, also a college student, dancer and singer. DW lives with the love of his life Tehila, in Cambridge MA with a border collie named Murphy and a grumpy cat who talks too much named Smokey.
